There is nothing quite like it in the world! Vardzia Cave City in Georgia is a labyrinth of thousands of rooms, its completion in 1185 by the legendary Queen Tamara. It was a dwelling place of over 50,000 people during the reign of King Georgi III until it was converted into a monastery by his daughter, Queen Tamara. It was constructed to as protection from the invasion of the Mongols. The massive cave dwelling is like a honey-comb of more than six-thousand apartments in a thirteen story complex. During that time, Vardzia already had a complex irrigation or watering system that ran throughout the entire complex.
The modern day Georgia was the number one tourist destination in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) before its members became independent countries. Georgia is now fast rising to reclaim the title after a brief commotion during the separation. Investments and businesses are now starting to flourish which is good news for its people and government.

It was truly a magnificent structure to behold. A lush of green vegetation and trees and a crystal clear river welcomed tourists from all over the world. Though the ride was long and a bit harsh, the view was nothing less than spectacular. Vardzia Cave city looked like a honey comb from afar and an intelligently architectured structure up close. Going inside the complex apartments, it was a wonder how this huge maze of apartments, throne rooms, churches and others were built during that time. And because Vardzia Cave City is one of Georgia’s prized tourist destinations, the government managed to restore and maintain the throne room of Queen Tamara, a couple of churches, the well which is known as “Tamara’s Tears” which is still being used by monks today to draw their water from and a couple of hundreds of apartment-type rooms. Visitors get to experience the ancient way of living even for a brief moment.

If you happen to visit Georgia in October, then the Sapara Monastery is a must see. It was built around 1300AD and its name was derived from “hidden place”. It was built that way, secluded and sheltered, away from the advancing Ottomans at that time.

- As the door slammed shut, a wave of claustrophobia enveloped the thirty-two people crammed into a dingy cell at the Elmina Castle on the Ghanaian Gold Coast.
